Yellow Cards Cost Dearly

With a number of players unavailable due to work commitments and illness Bryncethin were forced to field a young side, with some players playing out of position, in this first league fixture of 2017. With an average of just 19 years the home pack faced a big challenge against their more experienced opponents but did well, especially in the scrums where they caused a lot of problems for the Tonmawr eight.
The first 20 minutes were fairly equal, with the visitors back line looking dangerous, and it was their centre that broke the deadlock with a fine break and try that was converted to give them a seven point lead. Whilst both sides struggled to find any consistency in their respective line outs the home scrum was going well and lead to them being awarded a number of penalties, one of which was converted by early substitute Gareth Pearce to close the gap to 7-3 at the break.
The second period continued as the first but shortly into the half Bryncethin  seemed to lose their composure, not helped by them receiving two technical yellow cards within minutes of each other, and the visitors to run in four tries, three of which were converted. To their credit the home team continued to contest every ball and were rewarded when Ryan James made a good break in the middle of the field before passing on to Shane Howells, who crossed for a try.
Next Saturday Bryncethin travel to table topping Porthcawl, hopefully with a full squad for coach David Thomas to select from.
