Incredible Defence

Although they gave a good account of themselves in losing this WRU Bowl match by a single score Bryncethin will have no complaint with the final result.

The home side, who currently sit one league above Bryncethin, drew first blood, taking a three point lead with a well struck penalty 5 minutes into the match. Although the heavier home eight spent a period of time on their opponents line some determined a brave defence held them out and some adventurous counter attacking from the visitors provided them with some clear cut scoring opportunities themselves, only for wrong options or handling errors to let them down.

Early in the second half Bryncethin secured possession and some good handling saw openside Steve James cross for a try that gave them the lead but, as the weather and the conditions underfoot deteriorated, the more experienced and heavier home pack started to take control and provide a steady stream of possession that they kept tight, playing some very effective nine man rugby.

It was as a result of the pressure up front, that the home side secured what turned out to be the winning score when they were awarded a penalty try following a scrum on the Bryncethin line with 20 minutes of the match remaining.

With the lion's share of possession the home side were unable to cross the Cherry and Whites try line, but were able to see out the rest of the match and take the spoils at 10-5.

Next week Bryncethin return to league action when they entertain Pontrhydyfen
