Last week we received the devastating news that senior forwards coach Leighton Jenkins had lost his fight with acute pulmonary fibrosis. Malo, as you will have undoubtedly known him, will be missed deeply by all associated with the Cherry and Whites.
So, how do we pay suitable tribute to a top bloke, who everyone loved. He was a man who made friends wherever he went, whether with rugby, Cardiff City supporters, friends, family holidays or work colleagues.
The man born to be Leighton, but called Malo was a firm favourite on the circuit of clubs in South Wales, having either played for or coached most of them, it seems. He first made an appearance in Bryncethin colours in 1979, but had he wasn't only a Cherry and White. He came to us from Tondu and went on to play for other local rivals Ogmore Vale and Nantymoel. He coached Ogmore Vale and Kenfig Hill amongst others, but always migrated back to Bryncethin, where he felt most at home. He played for a time at Maesteg, when they were in their pre-professional heyday and he made an impression on his then teammate and latterly co-coach, Peter Bradley.
Pete commented, "[He was the] Only player I ever knew could play anywhere at a high level. We played in Plymouth years ago for Maesteg, he started hooker ended up wing that’s how versatile he was. Top, top man to have around and I’ll miss him big time!"
He helped take Bryncethin to District Cup finals at the then Millennium Stadium and is one of the lucky dads to have been able to play alongside his son Lloyd, for our seniors.
The whole local community and district rugby community are mourning the death of one of the characters of the game. The village pubs will be quieter and rugby clubs across Wales will miss his chats.
The funeral will take place at Coychurch Crematorium, Thursday 26th September, at 11:30.
Everyone at Bryncethin RFC send sincere condolences to Jacqui, Lloyd and Owen.
Rest in peace Malo, sound in the knowledge that we loved and will miss you. What would you think of that...
