The Cherry and Whites of Bryncethin RFC played Glyncorrwg at home last weekend, in their second match of the second half of the league season. The 25 - 3 win that they ground out against a much more experienced and heavier team, was nothing more than they deserved, as ill discipline from the visitors consistantly handed over territory to Bryncethin.
In the previous match, Glyncorrwg used their bigger pack to dominate, but this time around Bryncethin stood tall and played for each other, never taking a backward step. Bryncethin opened the scoring after 7 minutes, outside half Lloyd Bradley slotting a penalty. The match ebbed and flowed as the physicality of Glyncorrwg battled against the guile and speed of the Cherry and Whites. The home defence was superb as the visitors pressed, time after time forcing Corrwg into mistakes.
On 28 minutes, Glyncorrwg tied the scores after Bryncethin transgressed at the breakdown. As the half progressed, the home side lifted their spirits and, with a Glyncorrwg player in the sin bin, got their just rewards with an unconverted try on half time, by full back Shane Howells. 8-3 Bryncethin at half time.
Glyncorrwg kicked off the second half and immediately took the initiative as the home side were a bit slow out of the blocks. The slender lead looked to be in jeopardy, but again the Cherry and White wall in defence held firm and slowly but surely Bryncethin pushed Glyncorrwg back down the field and forced them to attack from deep. From one such backfoot attack, Bradley intercepted a forced pass and romped 50 metres to score unopposed. He duly converted to extend the margin to 12 points.
Only 3 minutes later, the home side were handed another opportunity and Bradley slotted the penalty that left Corrwg 2 full scores behind. The title contenders never threw in the towel and looked for more driving play from their big players, but as before, Bryncethin fronted up and forced them into making mistakes. This allowed the impressive Bryncethin side to counter attack at every opportunity, and on 69 minutes, they put the game to bed as it were, when wing, Josh 'Mini' Evans, chipped over the defence and was first ball over the Glyncorrwg line. Bradley expertly converted from close to touch.
The visitors looked shell shocked by this point and were unable to find their way back into the game, let alone get the three scores they needed in 10 minutes to clinch it. Bryncethin comfortably saw out the match with no more points scored, gaining a very impressive win that would have sent ripples through the division.
This win took the Cherry and Whites to 2nd in Div 3 West Central B after 9 wins from 12 starts. They look forward to visiting Briton Ferry on Saturday 19th Jan, with another W in their sights.
